TEACHING PORTFOLIO

Thank you for reviewing my creative work.

My professional work spans more than 30 years of feature films, documentaries, public-health communications, educational media, franchise development, and commercial video production. Throughout my career, I have used storytelling to help my audiences understand new ideas, information, experiences, and perspectives while remaining engaged and entertained.

The projects below represent selected examples of my work as a writer, producer, director, cinematographer, editor, and educator. Together, they reflect my commitment to narrative storytelling, collaborative filmmaking, community engagement, and emerging media practices.

FEATURE FILMS
"Cheerleader Ninjas" (2002) – Spoof Comedy Trailer
Roles: Writer, Producer, Director, First Cut Editor
This film originated in the mid-1990s with the goal of making and selling a film directly to the rental video market. Back then, this was a popular pipeline for beginning filmmakers because it allowed them to make a movie for a lower budget, without expensive stars, and get a quick return on investment. My business partner and I had no interest in trying to get into a festival. We were both fans of goofy comedies like "Airplane" and "The Naked Gun," so we tested the funniest titles we could think of, and "Cheerleader Ninjas" won. The film was shot on Super-16mm and first edited on a standard linear editing system, before getting access to an early Avid non-linear edit system. By 2001, the direct-to-video market was gone since most of the major rental outlets were controlled by studios. I cold-queried a great entertainment lawyer in LA who got me both foreign and domestic distribution with Lions Gate in two weeks. It was released on DVD in 2002 and now streams on Tubi and Amazon. Skills demonstrated: market research, fundraising, scriptwriting, project management, location scouting, film scheduling, crew research and hiring, budgeting, actor auditions and management, directing, post-production management, and distribution.

"Back Slash" (2006) – Horror-Comedy Trailer
Roles: Writer, Producer, Director, First Cut Editor
My attempt to make a horror-comedy similar to "The Evil Dead" tapped into the low-budget, direct-to-video horror genre while still clinging to my comedy roots. We ran into the usual student-filmmaker problems of changing locations, actor issues, tech stumbles (we used an early version of production management software that stopped working while out on location), and bad weather (we filmed much of the movie outdoors in the Colorado mountains). I learned enough about handling filming difficulties to write a textbook. Fight scenes were choreographed by Rocky Mountain Stunts and Mark Grove. We secured distribution with Below-the-Radar Films, which went bankrupt shortly after. Nobody ever said indie filmmaking was easy! Skills demonstrated: Market research, fundraising, scriptwriting, project management, location scouting, film scheduling, hiring, budgeting, actor auditions and management, directing, post-production management, and distribution.

DOCUMENTARIES
Tanka Fund Native American Documentary Series (2024)
Roles: Writer, Producer, Director, Cinematographer

This first video of a documentary series explores Native American food sovereignty, bison restoration, and tribal agricultural initiatives. Developed for Native-owned non-profit Tanka Fund, this project required extensive interviews with Native ranchers in South Dakota and Texas, while filming in remote locations during winter. Skills demonstrated: documentary interviewing, location production, nonprofit storytelling, and post-production workflow management. Final edit by Summer Simpson. Available on the Tanka Fund website and YouTube channel. Skills demonstrated: project management, documentary interviewing, location scouting and production, cultural awareness, nonprofit storytelling, and post-production workflow management.
National Grange, “Keeping Rural Seniors In Their Homes” (2025) – PBS Documentary
Roles: Writer, Producer, Director, Cinematographer, Voice-Over Talent
Rural seniors planning surgery face many difficult challenges, such as closing rural hospitals, driving long distances to healthcare providers, and obtaining post-operative care. "Keeping Rural Seniors in their Homes" offers helpful advice for ways rural seniors can receive the best possible outcomes from their medical procedures by staying at home as much as possible. Now streaming on Rocky Mountain PBS. Includes some stock video footage.  Skills demonstrated: documentary voiceover writing and performance, documentary interviewing, location scouting and production, nonprofit storytelling, post-production workflow management, and navigating PBS and nonprofit distribution channels.

STUDENT MENTORING PROJECTS

RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE SHORT DOCS (2017)
Roles: Project Management, Student Management & Mentoring
Ronald McDonald House approached the Art Institute of Colorado in 2017 to help them make promotional videos. My students filmed all interviews, B-roll, and edited the videos in time for the client's promotional campaign. This is the trailer for the video series.  Skills demonstrated: student team management, documentary interviewing, mentoring, nonprofit storytelling, and final delivery to a nonprofit client.

DOCUMENTARY FOR CHARITY –

"Impact Local" (2018)

Roles: Writer, Producer, Project Management, Student Management
Documentary about a charity that helps homeless families in Denver with free clothing and toiletries. My students assisted with filming on location in downtown Denver. Skills demonstrated:  documentary interviewing, cultural awareness, historical research, nonprofit storytelling, and final delivery to a nonprofit client.

DOCUMENTARY FOR CHARITY –
"PCs for People" (2017)

Roles: Writer, Producer, Project Management, Student Management
This nonprofit repurposes donated PCs and monitors to low-income families. My students volunteered to help with filming and post-production. Skills demonstrated: student team management, documentary interviewing, mentoring, nonprofit storytelling, and final delivery to a nonprofit client.

 DOCUMENTARY FOR CHARITY –

"Center on Colfax" (2016)
Roles: Writer, Producer, Project Management, Student Management
The Center on Colfax helps teens who have been abandoned by their families after coming out as LGBTQ by providing safe shelter, food, and clothing. My students helped with filming. Skills demonstrated:  documentary interviewing, cultural awareness, historical research, nonprofit storytelling, and final delivery to a nonprofit client.

EDUCATION & TRAINING
My company has produced more than 200 short training videos for various clients. Most of these programs are for emerging franchises, where I would work with the various HR departments and company owners to create a training program that included videos and evaluation materials. Then I would incorporate them into various Learning Management Systems, or work with their IT departments to create the LMS.
Premier Rental-Purchase (2019)
Roles: Producer, Director, Production Manager, Location Manager, Edit Supervisor
We produced dozens of videos for this franchise and worked for 18 months to create an all-inclusive training program. This sample video shows us filming on location in a company store in Houston, using actors for the sales associate and customer. Skills demonstrated:  educational client research, actor coaching, location scouting and preparation, and edit supervision.
Coaching Systems (2025)
Roles: Producer, Director, Production Manager, Location Manager, Edit Supervisor
This company specializes in training operators for industrial equipment, and we filmed training programs for ambulance and forklift drivers. This example shows our use of AI to demonstrate forklift safety, without endangering actors or equipment. Skills demonstrated: educational client research, location filming, non-actor coaching, AI research, and edit supervision.

MARKETING VIDEOS – HIGH END
As a filmmaker, I enjoy working with actors and locations to realize a client’s vision for their products. Creating high-end marketing videos like these is just as challenging as making a feature film, as they require a quality finished project that can market very expensive goods and services.
Evolution Dog Wash (2019)
Roles: Producer, Director, Talent Acquisition, Set Manager
We used a huge repurposed airplane hangar, the “32 Left Studio,” because we needed a space large enough to showcase an industrial dog-washing machine and for several set pieces and actors. We filmed 10 videos to market these large machines to upscale apartments and car washes. Cinematography by Josh Gold. Skills demonstrated: client industry research, actor coaching, location scouting, set building, directing, client relations, and edit supervision.
Adults and Crafts (2022)
Roles: Producer, Director, Location Manager, Client Relations
This unique adult social crafting club offers a variety of fun crafting projects. Users can subscribe to crafts to make at home or via Zoom, as well as in-person crafting classes. Skills demonstrated: educational client research, non-actor coaching, location and set preparation, interviews, and edit supervision.
