DOCUMENTARIES
Tanka Fund Native American Documentary Series (2024)
Roles: Writer, Producer, Director, Cinematographer

This first video of a documentary series explores Native American food sovereignty, bison restoration, and tribal agricultural initiatives. Developed for Native-owned non-profit Tanka Fund, this project required extensive interviews with Native ranchers in South Dakota and Texas, while filming in remote locations during winter. Skills demonstrated: documentary interviewing, location production, nonprofit storytelling, and post-production workflow management. Final edit by Summer Simpson. Available on the Tanka Fund website and YouTube channel. Skills demonstrated: project management, documentary interviewing, location scouting and production, cultural awareness, nonprofit storytelling, and post-production workflow management.
National Grange, “Keeping Rural Seniors In Their Homes” (2025) – PBS Documentary
Roles: Writer, Producer, Director, Cinematographer, Voice-Over Talent
Rural seniors planning surgery face many difficult challenges, such as closing rural hospitals, driving long distances to healthcare providers, and obtaining post-operative care. "Keeping Rural Seniors in their Homes" offers helpful advice for ways rural seniors can receive the best possible outcomes from their medical procedures by staying at home as much as possible. Now streaming on Rocky Mountain PBS. Includes some stock video footage.  Skills demonstrated: documentary voiceover writing and performance, documentary interviewing, location scouting and production, nonprofit storytelling, post-production workflow management, and navigating PBS and nonprofit distribution channels.

TRAINING VIDEOS

My company has produced more than 200 short training videos for various clients. Most of these programs are for emerging franchises, where I would work with the various HR departments and company owners to create a training program that included videos and evaluation materials. Then I would incorporate them into various Learning Management Systems, or work with their IT departments to create the LMS.

FEATURE FILMS
"Cheerleader Ninjas" (2002) – Spoof Comedy Trailer
Roles: Writer, Producer, Director, First Cut Editor
This film originated in the mid-1990s with the goal of making and selling a film directly to the rental video market. Back then, this was a popular pipeline for beginning filmmakers because it allowed them to make a movie for a lower budget, without expensive stars, and get a quick return on investment. My business partner and I had no interest in trying to get into a festival. We were both fans of goofy comedies like "Airplane" and "The Naked Gun," so we tested the funniest titles we could think of, and "Cheerleader Ninjas" won. The film was shot on Super-16mm and first edited on a standard linear editing system, before getting access to an early Avid non-linear edit system. By 2001, the direct-to-video market was gone since most of the major rental outlets were controlled by studios. I cold-queried a great entertainment lawyer in LA who got me both foreign and domestic distribution with Lions Gate in two weeks. It was released on DVD in 2002 and now streams on Tubi and Amazon. Skills demonstrated: market research, fundraising, scriptwriting, project management, location scouting, film scheduling, crew research and hiring, budgeting, actor auditions and management, directing, post-production management, and distribution.

"Back Slash" (2006) – Horror-Comedy Trailer
Roles: Writer, Producer, Director, First Cut Editor
My attempt to make a horror-comedy similar to "The Evil Dead" tapped into the low-budget, direct-to-video horror genre while still clinging to my comedy roots. We ran into the usual student-filmmaker problems of changing locations, actor issues, tech stumbles (we used an early version of production management software that stopped working while out on location), and bad weather (we filmed much of the movie outdoors in the Colorado mountains). I learned enough about handling filming difficulties to write a textbook. Fight scenes were choreographed by Rocky Mountain Stunts and Mark Grove. We secured distribution with Below-the-Radar Films, which went bankrupt shortly after. Nobody ever said indie filmmaking was easy! Skills demonstrated: Market research, fundraising, scriptwriting, project management, location scouting, film scheduling, hiring, budgeting, actor auditions and management, directing, post-production management, and distribution.
